Taal Volcano in Philippines
Taal volcano has erupted pushing streams of lava, dark ash clouds and steam 14km into the air. Authorities in the surrounding province of Batangas, have declared a "state of calamity".
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alert level to four, meaning an "explosive eruption", only level 5 is higher meaning a hazardous eruption is underway. PHIVOLCS requested a total evacuation of everyone within a 17km radius of the volcano, affecting around half a million people.
Almost 20,000 people have already sought refuge in temporary shelters with many more expected as evacuations take place. The provinces of Batangas and nearby Cavite were the hardest hit with 8,000 villagers forced to leave heir homes. Military helicopters were placed on standby to assist with the evacuation.
Volcanic ash has spread 100km and as far north as Quezon city forcing the airport to close temporarily. More than 25 million people are living within 100km of the volcano and could be affected with contaminated air and water.
