Earthquake in Philippines
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Manay in Davao Oriental, southern Philippines, on the morning of October 10, 2025.
Occurring at a depth of 23 kilometers, the quake triggered tsunami warnings for coastal areas within 300 kilometers of the epicenter. In Mati City, Davao Oriental, authorities reported structural damage, cracked buildings, and at least two confirmed fatalities. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) attributed the earthquake to a rupture along the Philippine Trench. Aftershocks of up to magnitude 6.4 were anticipated, prompting officials to urge residents to stay away from the shoreline.
This disaster follows a recent 6.9-magnitude earthquake in Cebu, which claimed at least 72 lives, highlighting the Philippines’ ongoing vulnerability to seismic activity as part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”
