Flood in Peru
Southern Peru experienced intense and prolonged rainfall that caused widespread flooding and destructive mudslides, particularly in the regions of Arequipa and Ica.
Two people, a father and son, were killed after being swept away in a mudslide in Arequipa. A further 15 people died when a military helicopter conducting flood rescue operations crashed on 22 February.
Approximately 5,500 homes were affected, with roads collapsing, vehicles buried, and neighbourhoods inundated. Flooding and mudslides cut off access to several towns, leaving residents stranded and reliant on emergency assistance.
Emergency response and damage assessment operations were carried out as authorities monitored the risk of further flooding and landslides from continued rainfall.
