Flood in Kazakhstan
As of 13 March, snow covering 67% of Kazakhstan had begun to melt in the regions of Kyzylorda, Turkestan, Zhambyl, West Kazakhstan, Atyrau, and Mangystau. Heavy rain had been forecast across much of the country, increasing the risk of flooding. Water levels in numerous rivers were already rising.
On 14 March, the Chizha-2 River in Taskalinsky overflowed its banks, surpassing the critical level of 801 cm. Villages along the river, such as Shchezhin—home to approximately 1,200 residents—were identified as at risk.
In anticipation of spring floods, the Government of Kazakhstan implemented proactive measures to monitor hydrological conditions. Reservoirs were discharged to maintain capacity, and across 16 regions, 384 dams were repaired. Reconstruction efforts were also underway for additional infrastructure. These actions aimed to protect 84 settlements, thereby enhancing the safety of an estimated 359,000 people.
