Wildfire in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is currently experiencing a severe spike in wildfires triggered by an intense regional heatwave. On July 15 alone, eight separate forest fires were recorded across the country. A major forest fire broke out in the Borodulikha District of the Abai region, where over 600 emergency personnel, 148 vehicles, and multiple aircraft are actively combating the flames.

Authorities have safely evacuated 233 people from the Abai region. This includes 164 children and 19 staff members from the DosbolLike children's camp, alongside residents from the outskirts of Kamyshenka village. Significant fires are also being fought in the Akmola and Kostanay regions, as well as the Buyratau and Burabay national parks. Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has dispatched Emergencies Minister Chingis Arinov and Ecology Minister Yerlan Nyssanbayev directly to the disaster zones to coordinate a local containment strategy. Aircraft have performed over 123 water drops, releasing more than 157 tonnes of water onto active fire lines.

While the intense, dry heatwave caused a massive surge in steppe and dry-vegetation fires, light rainfall has begun to reach parts of the eastern region, offering crucial assistance to ground crews.
