Flood and Landslide in Indonesia
Monsoon rains have caused flash flooding and landslides in and around Indonesia's capital Jakarta. At least 60 people have been killed and thousands are displaced.
Monsoon rains have caused rivers to burst their banks which have submerged over a dozen districts in the Jakarta area. The flash flooding has also caused a number of landslides which buried at least 12 people.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported that rivers had started to overflow as rainfall had persisted since new year's eve. Reports suggest that this is the worst flooding in the area since 2007, when 80 people were killed over 10 days.
Rescue efforts have been hampered by bad weather, blocked roads, mudslides and flooding of up to 2 metres in some areas. Government data shows that some 173,000 people were still unable to return home and were still using emergency shelters, mostly in the hardest-hit area of Bekasi.
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said that more downpours are forecast for the Jakarta region in the coming days.
