Flood in Kazakhstan

A dam collapse in the Akmola region of Kazakhstan triggered a large‑scale emergency response and heightened concerns about spring flood risks across the country.

The breach occurred at the Shoptykol dam in the Korgalzhyn district, approximately 2 km from the village of Sabyndy. The collapse happened around 1:30 a.m., releasing significant volumes of water into surrounding fields. Agriculture and transportation have been the main sectors affected.

Emergency services deployed 170 personnel and 43 units of equipment to reinforce levees and divert the flow. Authorities reported that major roads, including the Astana–Korgalzhyn highway, remained open as culverts successfully managed the runoff.

Officials warn that a second flood wave is likely in mid‑to‑late May 2026, particularly in the mountainous areas of East Kazakhstan where snow reserves remain high (around 52%).

Current monitoring indicates stable conditions, but authorities remain on alert as river levels continue to rise.
