Flood in Vietnam

Typhoon Nari made landfall on the central coast of Vietnam on 15 October, with maximum winds of 102 kph, and caused floods that inundated thousands of homes and left 11 people dead.

Damage from the typhoon resulted in 11,000 homes being destroyed in seven provinces, but more than 34,000 homes suffered damage or destruction by the flooding that soon followed. Many homes were left under almost 2 metres of water and four villages were isolated by the flooding.

41 ships were sunk by the storm in Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces, and 662 hectares of rice and farm land were damaged. 110 schools suffered damage from Nari's winds.

122,000 people were evacuated as the typhoon approached Vietnam and a further 5,000 have been evacuated after their homes were flooded.

Nari weakened into a tropical depression as it moved further inland but caused the rain to continue for several days. Relief efforts have begun and the floodwaters are expected to recede very slowly.

Affected provinces include: Quang Nam, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Ngai, Quang Tri, Nghe An, Quang Binh and Binn Dinh.
