Flood in Sumatra, Indonesia

In Indonesia's West Sumatra province on the island of Sumatra torrential rain has triggered flash floods, landslides, and cold lava flow creating a mud-like mixture of volcanic ash, rock debris and water. At least 43 people have lost their lives and 15 remain missing.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has deployed around 400 personnel, including rescuers, police, and military to search for the missing people and organise evacuations of the worst affected areas. Several emergency management measures are currently in place, including restoring road access, removing landslide material, and coordinating with regional organizations.

The cold lava flow, known in Indonesia as a lahar, came from Mount Marapi, one of Sumatra's most active volcanoes. More than 20 people were killed when Marapi erupted in December. A series of eruptions have followed since.

Indonesia's meteorology agency, BMKG are forecasting that heavy rains in West Sumatra province are still expected until next week.
