Storm in New Zealand
A powerful storm system swept across New Zealand, unleashing destructive winds of up to 140 km/h, heavy rain, and extreme fire danger across parts of the lower North and South Islands. Wellington, Marlborough, and the Kaikōura coast were among the hardest-hit areas, with red wind warnings issued as fierce gusts battered communities. Near Kaikōura, several homes were destroyed by fast-moving fires fuelled by the severe conditions.
In Canterbury, a local state of emergency was declared as damaging winds triggered power outages, property damage, and widespread travel disruption.
Authorities warned that another, potentially stronger, storm system was set to arrive later in the week and urged residents to remain vigilant, secure loose items around their homes, and closely follow MetService updates.
