Cyclone Vaianu in New Zealand
Cyclone Vaianu impacted New Zealand in 2026, bringing periods of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hazardous coastal conditions, particularly across parts of the North Island. The worst-affected areas included Northland, where the heaviest rainfall led to widespread surface flooding, road closures, and temporary community isolation, as well as Auckland (especially rural north and western areas) where flash flooding and power outages were reported.
Additional impacts were experienced across the Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, and parts of the Bay of Plenty, including slips, transport disruption, and localised flooding.
The system caused damage to infrastructure and disruptions to transport networks and essential services, with emergency management authorities monitoring conditions closely and supporting response efforts as impacts gradually eased.
