Tropical Cyclone Wipha in Thailand

Tropical Cyclone Wipha brought sustained heavy rainfall to northern Thailand in July 2025, causing widespread flooding across several provinces. Nan was among the hardest hit, with 150–200 mm of rain overwhelming rivers and drainage systems. Floodwaters inundated residential areas, forced school closures, and isolated communities in districts like Bo Kluea, Chiang Klang, Muang, and Pua.

Neighbouring provinces faced similar conditions. In Chiang Rai, critical infrastructure was flooded, including a hospital that had to evacuate patients and limit services. Phrae province also saw severe flooding, with rising rivers submerging homes, disrupting transport, and prompting evacuations.

Authorities monitored the situation and coordinated emergency responses. The storm also affected other Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines—where it formed—as well as Laos and Vietnam.
