Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica

As of October 27, 2025, Hurricane Melissa—a powerful Category 5 storm with winds near 260 km/h—is moving slowly about 100–130 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica.

The system poses an extreme threat, bringing the potential for up to 1 metre of rain, storm surges up to 4 metres along the southern coast, and catastrophic flooding, landslides, and wind damage.

The Jamaican government has activated emergency shelters, closed airports and seaports, and issued evacuation orders for vulnerable coastal and low-lying communities as the island braces for prolonged severe conditions.
