Oil Spill

Causes

An oil spill is the release of liquid petroleum into the environment, typically into oceans, due to an accident or leak of an oil transporting vessel, oil platform, or drilling operation.

Consequences

The environmental impact of oil spills is severe, They can harm wildlife, ecosystems, and local economies, especially in fishing and tourism. The unpredictable movement of oil due to natural forces adds to the challenge of containment and clean-up efforts, complicating responses and prolonging recovery.

Satellite data

Radar data is typically employed to detect oil spills via satellite. However, locating spills is challenging due to the vastness of the oceans and the need to identify relatively small patches of oil. Differentiating between an oil spill and natural occurrences or other substances can also be difficult. Once an oil spill requiring monitoring is identified, satellites are valuable for determining its source, mapping its extent, and tracking its potential path.
