Oil spill in Russia

A state of emergency was declared by Russian authorities after 20,000 tonnes of diesel oil leaked into the Ambarnaya River near the Siberian city of Norilsk after a fuel tank at a power station collapsed.

The spill is reported to have contaminated a 350 sq km area as oil leaked into the Ambarnaya River affecting around 7 miles downstream.

Disaster management teams deployed booms to prevent the oil from spreading further and to prevent contamination from entering Lake Pyasino and the Kara Sea.
