Flood in New Zealand

A Red Heavy Rain Warning was issued for Coastal Dunedin and the Clutha District in Otago, New Zealand, associated with a severe weather system that brought intense rainfall over a short period, resulting in significant impacts across both coastal and inland areas.

The event led to widespread surface flooding, elevated river levels, and localised landslides and slips, creating hazardous travel conditions. Low-lying parts of Dunedin and river catchments throughout the Clutha District, including Balclutha and surrounding rural communities, were among the most affected areas.

Impacts included stormwater system overload, road closures, and wider transport disruption, along with contamination risks affecting local waterways. Some infrastructure and agricultural land were also impacted due to saturated ground conditions.

While the heaviest rainfall has since eased, the region remains in a recovery and monitoring phase. Residual flooding effects, unstable ground conditions, and ongoing assessments of river levels and infrastructure continue across the affected areas.
