Cyclone Phailin in India

Cyclone Phailin struck Odisha and Andhra Pradesh states on 12 October with 200 kph winds. Eighteen people have been reported killed and almost one million have been evacuated from the area.

Authorities were aware of the coming storm and ordered an evacuation before it made landfall, which analysts believe saved many lives. It was said to be the largest evacuation of this kind in India's history. There were fears that the storm would develop into a Super Cyclone, but fortunately it did not become this strong, and has greatly weakened as it has moved further inland to the north.

The strong winds and waters from a storm surge took a toll on coastal districts, destroying or damaging many homes and cutting off power. Roads and railways have also been blocked by debris.

Hundreds of villages have been evacuated in the Odisha and Andhra Pradesh states, at least ten of which have been reportedly inundated.

Relief operations are underway and authorities are working to restore power to affected areas and clear the roads. Heavy rain is forecast to continue for at least another 24 hours.
