Flood in Sudan

Severe floods affected Darfur and areas along the Nile, impacting several local communities and cultural heritage sites. Essential infrastructure links were washed away, including the Azum Valley Bridge over Wadi Barei at Mali—50 kilometres east of Murnei in West Darfur—which formed a critical logistics route between West, Central, and South Darfur.

The Arbaat Dam, located 20 kilometres north of Port Sudan, also collapsed. The loss of these bridges had a major impact on humanitarian aid delivery across Darfur, as it effectively separated West Darfur State from the rest of the region. As a result, aid could not be delivered to Central, South, East, or North Darfur.

Flooding is an annual challenge in Sudan during August and September. Each year, monsoon rains poured into the Ethiopian Highlands and flowed into the Blue Nile and White Nile. As the rivers moved north through Sudan and South Sudan, floodwaters often swamped riverside communities.
