Typhoons Kalmaegi and Fung-Wong in the Philippines
Typhoon Tino (international name Kalmaegi) struck the central Philippines, bringing destructive winds, heavy rain, and severe flooding across Southern Leyte, Leyte, Cebu, Bohol, and Eastern Visayas.
It made multiple landfalls across the Visayas islands, including Silago, Southern Leyte, where it came ashore with maximum winds of about 150 km/h and gusts up to 205 km/h. More than 1.1 million people were affected, nearly 600,000 displaced, and at least 26 lives lost.
Widespread power outages, landslides, and storm surges up to three metres compounded existing disaster impacts in the region. Satellite data were activated through the International Charter ‘Space and Major Disasters’ to support damage assessment and relief operations.
