Flood in New Zealand
In April 2026, New Zealand experienced a series of severe flooding events driven by successive storm systems, including Cyclone Vaianu and later intense rainfall across both the North and South Islands.
The North Island was particularly affected, with Northland, Auckland, and Wellington experiencing widespread flash flooding, landslides, and significant disruption to infrastructure. Wellington was among the worst-hit areas, recording intense short-duration rainfall that led to a state of emergency, evacuations, and at least one reported fatality.
Cyclone Vaianu contributed to the impacts as it crossed the North Island, bringing damaging winds and heavy rain that resulted in river flooding, power outages, and transport disruption.
Later in the month, additional severe thunderstorms produced record-breaking rainfall in Wellington, worsening already saturated ground conditions and triggering further flooding and slope instability.
Across the country, emergency services responded to widespread impacts including road closures, property damage, and evacuations, while authorities continued to warn of ongoing risks from high river levels and potential landslides even after the main rainfall events had passed.
