Flood in Nepal

On 26 August 2026, a major flash flood struck Rasuwa District in northern Nepal after a sudden and intense surge of water entered the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibet (China) side at approximately 9:15 AM local time. The event rapidly affected the border areas of Timure and Rasuwagadhi before moving downstream towards Syabrubesi and the Trishuli River corridor.

Significant damage has been reported to settlements, markets, roads, bridges, police and customs infrastructure, and hydropower facilities. Numerous people have been reported dead or missing, while rescue operations have been complicated by damaged transport routes, difficult Himalayan terrain and continuing river hazards.

The precise cause of the sudden water surge remains under investigation. A major landslide or rockslide on the Tibetan side, potentially associated with the sudden release or displacement of water, is among the mechanisms being considered. The event appears to have developed extremely rapidly, leaving limited time for communities and infrastructure in the river valley to respond.

Authorities have warned communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers to remain alert as elevated water levels and debris flows may pose further risks downstream. The disaster has also disrupted an important Nepal–China border trade route and caused widespread damage to critical infrastructure in the Himalayan region.
