Flood in Mozambique
Mozambique endured one of its most destructive flood emergencies in years, affecting nearly 800,000 people across the southern and central provinces, particularly Gaza, Maputo, and Sofala. Roads, bridges, and health facilities were severely damaged, isolating communities and disrupting supply chains. A total of 82,634 homes were destroyed or damaged, with 123 people killed and 101 injured.
Parts of Maputo were submerged up to rooftop level, and the capital was temporarily cut off after a major highway flooded. The Senteeko Dam in Mpumalanga, South Africa, was also placed at critical risk of failure following structural damage.
The flooding created severe public health risks, including waterborne disease and malnutrition, while displaced crocodiles added further danger in urban areas.
Large areas remained inaccessible by road, prompting urgent calls for air and maritime aid. The UK deployed specialist search and rescue teams, including firefighters from West Midlands and Cheshire, to assist in Maputo Province and Xai-Xai, while the UN, IFRC, and UNICEF coordinated escalating relief efforts.
