Flood in Kenya

Intense rainfall has triggered another humanitarian emergency, this time in the highlands of Elgeyo Marakwet, Kenya.

Due to the rains a landslide occurred on, 1 November, sweeping away homes, roads, and farmland. The military deployed four aircraft to assist rescue teams in reaching areas that were completely cut off.

The death toll has risen to at least 26, with 30 people still missing. More than 1,000 homes have been destroyed, and dozens of people have been injured or displaced. Survivors from Murkutwa and Chesongoch villages were airlifted to Eldoret for medical treatment.

Heavy rains continue across Kenya, with flash floods reported in multiple counties, displacing thousands. Rescue efforts were briefly suspended due to worsening flood conditions on Sunday.

This disaster highlights Kenya’s vulnerability to extreme weather events, as the country grapples with both floods and droughts. The landslides in Elgeyo Marakwet underscore the urgent need for improved climate resilience and disaster preparedness.
