Flood in Dominican Republic

Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding and localized landslides across the Dominican Republic, with the most severe impacts reported in Santo Domingo and surrounding provinces. More than 300 mm of rain fell within a 24-hour period in some areas, leading to widespread urban flooding, river overflow, and infrastructure damage.

The flooding has also disrupted essential services, including electricity, water supply, transportation routes, and schools. Authorities have reported damage to over 1,000 homes and the evacuation of more than 5,000 people to temporary shelters and safer areas.

Flood and landslide alerts remain in effect for several provinces, including Santo Domingo, Monte Cristi, Espaillat, Duarte, Puerto Plata, and San José de Ocoa, where some communities have become isolated due to overflowing rivers and blocked roads.

The ongoing emergency has resulted in casualties and continues to pose a high risk to vulnerable low-lying and hillside areas.
