Hurricane, Floods in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama
Extensive damage and flooding following Hurricane Katrina left thousands without shelter, drinking water and power in the Mississippi delta and Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The area around Lafayette, Louisiana, was flooded on 1st September. The city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was flooded on 1 September. The city of Jackson, Mississippi, was also flooded and without power. 10-20,000 people took refuge in the Jackson Coliseum. The centre of Mobile, Alabama, was under up to a meter of water on 30 August. On U.S. Highway 98 in Mobile, an important access route for trucks, the Cochrane-Africatown Bridge was damaged by an oil rig ripped from its moorings by the hurricane.
