Description of the event

A North Atlantic tropical cyclone, Hurricane Irene, inflicted extensive damage on the Caribbean causing landfall in North Carolina and the East Coast of the United States. The cyclone passed through inland New York and Vermont causing devastating damage.

Strong force-winds measuring at 93mph snapped power lines and flooded streets. Officials warned of further dangerous currents after thousands of residents were without power. The aftermath of the cyclone could cost billions of dollars worth of damage affecting up to 65 million people in Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.
