Description of the event

Levees were breached and floodwaters submerged the city of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina made landfall just south of the city on 29 August 2005. 80% of the city was under six meters of water on 31 August 2005. Along the Gulf coast and the Mississippi, flooding was extensive. Authorities put the estimated death toll possibly in the thousands, as rescue efforts were underway on 31 August.
