Description of the event

Torrential rains triggered floods and landslides on Indonesia's Java Island, with Garut district being the worst affected. 36 people have been reported killed, 22 are missing and over 6000 people have been left homeless.

The city of Jakarta was badly affected with up to 2 metres of surface water bringing the city's business district to a halt.

Jakarta's police force along with the government have begun to evacuate affected communities and provide inflatable boats.

The president of Jakarta informed reporters that construction and anti-flood projects would commence immediately as the city is prone to intense flooding during monsoon season.
