Description of the event

Heavy rains, which began on 19 June 2013, have resulted in flooding along the Parana and Iguazu Rivers in the littoral region of Argentina. Hundreds of people have evacuated their homes so far and it is expected that thousands more will need to be evacuated.

More than 200 mm of rainfall fell in a single week, far more than the monthly average of 130 mm, and it is forecast that the flooding will peak approximately on 15 July. In the meantime, the water levels of the Parana and Iguazu Rivers continue to rise.

The flooding is expected to have an impact on the economy of affected major cities, too, due to the disruption of the floods and the recovery efforts that will follow.

The neighbouring countries of Paraguay and Uruguay have also been affected by the floods, as has southern Brazil.

The following cities in Argentina are expected to be evacuated by 15 July:

Pasco de la Patria, Itaibate, Barranqueras, Puerto Vileva, Resistencia, Corrientes capital, Goya, La paz, Reconquista.
