Description of the event

Two earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 and 5.0 struck the Lakes Region on 3 February at 7.35 et 11.37 UTC, the first in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the second in Rwanda. Media report 34 dead, 750 wounded, and considerable damage in the two countries.

Acquired: 2005-2008 Extent and variation of estimated ground shaking throughout the affected region. This color-coded intensity map is derived from empirical relations between peak ground motions and Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI). Information provided is not guaranteed to be correct or complete; conclusions drawn from such information are the sole responsibility of the user. Locations within the same intensity area will not necessarily experience the same level of damage since damage depends heavily on the type of structure, the nature of the construction, and the details of the ground motion at that site. For this reason more or less damage than described in the MMI scale may occur.
