Description of the event

A 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April 2015, also affecting the neighbouring country of China.

20 people are reported to have died in China, and thousands of people have been affected.

China's southwestern counties along the border with Nepal were affected by the earthquake, particularly the city of Xigazê in Tibet. Over 20,000 people have been evacuated from Xigazê and highways have been cut off by landslides. It is reported that as many as 10,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed in Xigazê and two aftershocks struck the region after the earthquake on 25 April. The first was at 5.9 magnitude at 17:17 (local time) on 25 April, and the second was 5.3 at 01:42 (local time) on 26 April.

Thousands of rescue workers are at work in Xigazê and the counties of Gyirong and Nyalam, providing relief, supplies and shelter to those affected by the earthquake. Construction equipment is also being put to use to clear roads of debris.
