Description of the event

Tropical cyclone Nargis hit the capital Yangon, causing widespread devastation in the city and the surrounding areas. Entire villages were submerged when the storm hit the low-lying coastal delta, a heavily populated area. By 12 May, the government of Myanmar announced a death toll of 31,938 people, with 29,770 missing. The UN estimates more than 62,000 dead.

Yangon Flood RADARSAT-2 Scale 1:100.000

Acquired: 07/05/2008 (Radarsat-2); 02/03/2008 (Spot-5) RADARSAT-2 imagery was used to map water surfaces following Cyclone Nargis. The flood layer is overlaid onto a SPOT-5 reference image processed into natural colours. This image acquired the 2nd of March 2008 is used to map the water bodies visible before the arrival of the monsoon season.

Yangon Flood Water Depth RADARSAT-2 Scale 1:50.000 v2

Acquired: 07/05/2008 Water depth estimates derived from a context and textural analysis of an ultra fine mode RADARSAT 2 image. Darker blue indicates potentially deeper, longer-standing water, whereas the light blue areas, being shallower, would dry out first.

Myanmar, Flood Water Detection for Twantay Township, Yangon Division

Acquired: 07/05/2008 Satellite-detected flood waters over Twantay Township (MMR013027), south of Yangon, on 7 May 2008. Standing flood waters were detected with Radarsat data acquired on 7 May 2008. Acquired: 06/05/2008 (ALOS Palsar) and 07/11/2000 (Landsat-7 ETM) Flooded areas of the central Irrawaddy division derived from ALOS Palsar radar data of 06/05/2008 (in light blue), with normal water levels as shown by Landsat-7 data from 2000 (in dark blue). Flooded areas may also contain regions covered by water before the disaster due to the prevalence of wet rice cultivation.

Damage Labutta SPOT5 20May08

Acquired: 20-24/05/2008; 20/12/2007 Satellite-based damage assessment for Labutta (MMR017004), Ayeyarwady Division, based on SPOT-5 imagery acquired on 20 and 24 May 2008 and 20 December 2007. Damaged industrial/warehouse buildings as well as boat terminal/docking facilities have been individually identified by site location. Damage Assessment for Town of Labutta

Acquired: 07-10/05/2008 Satellite-detected reductions in flood water levels over Kyauktan Township (MMR013024), south of Yangon, as measured with Radarsat data between 7 and 10 May 2008. Changes in color over flooded areas from yellow to red indicate a larger relative amount of flood water reduction. Areas shown in dark blue indicate flood water levels on 7 May that did not significantly change from flood levels on 10 May 2008. Preliminary assessment not yet verified in the field.
