Description of the event

Hurricane Matthew, a Category Four storm, passed by the north-east coast of Cuba on 4 October, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds.

No fatalities were reported, and almost one million people were evacuated as the hurricane approached. But many houses were damaged or destroyed and hundreds of thousands remain in relief shelters until - or if - they can return to their homes.

A Category Four storm is on the higher end of the Saffir-Simpson scale, and is used to classify storms that may cause "catastrophic" damage.

Hurricane Matthew has affected 16 countries in the Caribbean, and had a devastating impact on nearby Haiti. The storm moved north towards the Bahamas and the United States after hitting Cuba.
