700th activation of the International Charter

On February 22, 2021, the International Charter 'Space and Major Disasters' received an emergency call from Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) based on a request from Manila Observatory for the impact of Tropical Storm Auring (also known as Dujuan) on the Philippines.

This marks the 700th activation of the Charter since its first activation in November 2000.

ADRC submitted the request through a co-operative arrangement between the Charter and Sentinel Asia, which enables members of Sentinel Asia, an international framework offering space technology for disaster management in the Asia-Pacific area, to submit requests to the Charter.

The Charter celebrated its 20th anniversary last year and was activated by its Authorized Users and Co-operating Bodies 55 times during 2020.

The Charter will continue to provide space-based data and information for emergency response to major disasters worldwide.
