The 21st annual report of the International Charter is now available, and describes the Charter's activities throughout 2021.

The Charter was activated 50 times in 2021, covering disasters in 28 countries. This amount of activations is higher than the annual average since 2017: the average is now 42 activations per year and ranges from 32 in 2011 to 55 in 2020. By the end of 2021, the Charter had been triggered for 742 disasters in 130 countries since 2000.

Bolivia, Swaziland, Madagascar, Chile, Tunisia, Haiti and Togo activated the Charter in 2021, thanks to their Authorized Users status achieved through the Charter's Universal Access initiative allowing them to request satellite data from the Charter in the event of a major disaster in their countries.

Three new satellites joined the Charter (virtual) constellation; Vision-1 (from Airbus), CBERS (from INPE), and SAOCOM (from CONAE).

The Charter continued it's cooperation with UNOOSA, UNITAR/UNOSAT, Sentinel Asia, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, and the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) in 2021. Each organization worked with the Charter in different ways, including promoting the Charter and use of satellite data for emergency response, sharing maps produced for disasters the Charter was activated for, and supporting the Charter as Project Managers of activations.

The two most catastrophic events in 2021 were the earthquake in Haiti that killed 2,575 people, injured 12,763 and affected 702,763 people, and floods in India that killed 1,282 people and affected 375,000..
