Oil spill in Ecuador
On 13 March 2025, a rupture occurred in the Trans-Ecuadorian Oil Pipeline System (SOTE) in Estero el Vergel, located in the Cube parish of Quinindé canton, Ecuador.
An environmental emergency was declared following oil contamination of the Esmeraldas River, which posed significant risks to both local communities and wildlife in the coastal province of Esmeraldas.
There were concerns that the spill may have reached the sea along the Ecuadorian coastline.
Authorities attributed the rupture to landslides triggered by intense rainfall. In response, specialized teams and resources were deployed to mitigate the spill’s impact in the affected area.
