Flood in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is currently experiencing severe flooding and mudslides triggered by intense southwest monsoon downpours over the last 48 hours.

Massive rocks, mudflows, and collapsed electricity pylons have blocked critical main roads in the central highlands, severing transport lines. Extreme rainfall exceeding 155 mm in areas like Watawala and Nawalapitiya has pushed the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Kalu rivers past minor flood thresholds.

In the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya Districts, all schools have been ordered to remain completely shut.

Five individuals died after being buried in mudslides that completely overran two houses in the island's central region. Nearly 2,000 citizens have been evacuated, and at least 129 homes have suffered structural damage.

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued a Level 3 (Red) Evacuation Warning for high-risk zones in the Kandy District, specifically Pasbage Korale and Ganga Ihala Korale. The Sri Lankan military, alongside Navy and Army troops, has deployed to flooded communities to rescue marooned residents and assist families trapped by mudflows.
