Flood in Kazakhstan

A dam breach at the Shoptykol Dam occurred in early April 2026 in the Korgalzhyn District of Akmola Region, Kazakhstan, approximately 2 km north of the village of Sabyndy. The failure resulted in the uncontrolled release of water from the Shoptykol reservoir, leading to inundation of surrounding agricultural land and low-lying steppe areas.

Response operations were initiated rapidly to manage floodwaters and reduce downstream risk, including the deployment of emergency personnel and equipment to reinforce channels, protect infrastructure, and support local mitigation measures. The Astana–Korgalzhyn highway and nearby transport links were monitored closely to ensure continued access and safety.

The primary impacts were concentrated in rural areas around Sabyndy, with flooding of farmland and temporary disruption to local infrastructure. No significant urban flooding was reported, and emergency actions helped to limit the extent of impacts to nearby communities.
