Tropical storm Melissa in Dominican Republic

Tropical Storm Melissa brought torrential rains and severe flooding to the Dominican Republic this week, leaving a trail of destruction across multiple provinces.

According to emergency officials, more than 900 residents were displaced by rising waters, with 61 people relocated to temporary shelters. The storm damaged at least 183 homes and cut off access to 19 communities due to flooded roads and landslides.

One of the most critical impacts was the disruption of water services. The National Institute of Potable Water and Sewage (INAPA) reported that 56 aqueducts were affected, 53 completely out of service and 3 partially operational - leaving over 1.1 million people without access to clean drinking water.

In response to the escalating crisis, authorities placed several provinces under Red Alert, prompting the suspension of schools and non-essential services. Emergency crews worked around the clock to assist with evacuations and deliver aid to affected areas.

As part of the national response, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) and humanitarian agencies have been coordinating relief efforts, including the distribution of food, water, and medical supplies to affected communities, while engineers work to restore damaged infrastructure and water systems.
