The 19th annual report of the International Charter is now available, and describes the Charter's activities throughout 2019.

The Charter was activated 43 times in 2019, covering disasters in 27 countries. By the end of 2019, the Charter had been triggered for 637 disasters in 127 countries since 2000.

Three new countries joined the Charter's Universal Access initiative in 2019; Ghana, Eswatini, and Tunisia. This granted them the status of Authorized Users, allowing them to request satellite data from the Charter in the event of a major disaster in their countries.

The PlanetScope series of satellites were added to the Charter's virtual constellation.

The Charter continued it's cooperation with UNOOSA, UNITAR/UNOSAT, Sentinel Asia, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, and the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) in 2019. Each organization worked with the Charter in different ways, including promoting the Charter and use of satellite data for emergency response, sharing maps produced for disasters the Charter was activated for, and supporting the Charter as Project Managers of activations.

Notable examples of activations in 2019 included a flood in India in July, which affected more than 3 million people and killed 1,900, and Cyclone Idai which affected both Zimbabwe and Mozambique in March and is one of the worst storms on record in Africa and the Southern Hemisphere. Statistical analysis indicated that 2019 was a year of relatively low loss of human life in comparison to other years, but it was marked by a very high degree of damages caused by disasters. The Charter was activated for 6 of the 10 most severe disasters in terms of loss of life in 2019.
