Storm in New Zealand
Severe flooding has hit New Zealand’s North Island over the past few days, with multiple regions declaring states of emergency. A powerful subtropical low‑pressure system has brought torrential rain, landslides, and dangerously high river levels across towns including Whitianga, Warkworth, and Ōakura. Key regions under pressure include Northland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne/Tairāwhiti, Whangārei, Hauraki, and Thames‑Coromandel.
Widespread evacuations have been carried out in low‑lying and landslide‑prone areas. There have been significant road closures, and at least one person has been reported missing after being swept away. The situation is still evolving, with authorities warning of continued life‑threatening conditions.
Authorities are urging people in flood‑prone areas to move to higher ground and to avoid driving through floodwaters, as several rescues have already taken place. As the severe weather continues, residents are being told to prepare for evacuation at short notice. Severe thunderstorm warnings remain in place for the Far North and Whangārei, with strong gales expected in Auckland, Waikato, and parts of the South Island.
