Storm in New Zealand

Severe flooding battered New Zealand’s North Island over several days, prompting multiple regions to declare states of emergency. A powerful subtropical low-pressure system unleashed torrential rain, landslides, and dangerously swollen rivers across communities including Whitianga, Warkworth, and Ōakura. The worst-affected areas included Northland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne/Tairāwhiti, Whangārei, Hauraki, and Thames-Coromandel.

Widespread evacuations were carried out in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, while major road closures disrupted travel across the region. At least one person was reported missing after being swept away by floodwaters. Authorities warned that conditions remained dangerous as the emergency unfolded.

Residents in vulnerable areas were urged to move to higher ground and avoid driving through floodwaters, with multiple rescues already having taken place. As the severe weather persisted, communities were advised to be ready to evacuate at short notice. Severe thunderstorm warnings remained in force for the Far North and Whangārei, while strong gales affected Auckland, Waikato, and parts of the South Island.
