Oil spill in Kazakhstan
An oil spill has been discovered in the Capsian Sea on 16 August. It was spotted on a Sentinel-1A satellite image.
The pollution stretched 82 square kilometres along the shipping route from Port Kuryk to Baku, affected waters of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, a high-traffic maritime route used for oil and cargo transport.
Oil spills threatens fragile marine ecosystems already under stress from shrinking water levels, methane emissions, and industrial pollution.
