Oil spill in Kazakhstan
An oil spill was discovered in the Caspian Sea on 16 August. It was spotted on a Sentinel-1A satellite image.
The pollution stretched across 82 square kilometres along the shipping route from Port Kuryk to Baku and affected the waters of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, a high-traffic maritime route used for oil and cargo transport.
Oil spills threaten fragile marine ecosystems already under stress from shrinking water levels, methane emissions, and industrial pollution.
