Earthquake in Syrian Arab Republic

Two powerful earthquakes hit Northern Syria, and parts of Türkiye, within the space of 12 hours destroying hundreds of buildings and claiming the lives of thousands.

The first earthquake hit in the early hours of 6 February 2023 and measured 7.8 on the Richter scale - making it one of the most powerful seismic quakes that the region has experienced in, at least, the last century.

The second earthquake was measured as 7.7 on the Richter scale and hit unexpectedly several hours later. 100 smaller aftershocks were registered by seismologists after the event with the strongest reported as magnitude 6.6.

Nearly 240,000 rescuers continue to work in the worst affected areas, though no survivors have been found recently. The number of people killed by the earthquakes that struck Türkiye and Syria earlier this month has now passed 50,000, according to the latest figures from both countries.
