Earthquake in the Philippines
On the evening of 30 September, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Bogo City in Cebu province. In response, authorities declared a state of calamity across the province.
Homes were destroyed, bridges collapsed, and the bell tower of an old church was reduced to rubble. Rescuers worked tirelessly to sift through the debris in search of survivors, while officials rushed to deliver aid and restore electricity and communication lines.
The death toll reached 69 and continued to rise. Injured victims and other patients were treated outside hospital buildings as aftershocks persisted.
The earthquake struck just a week after the region had been battered by back-to-back typhoons, the latest being Typhoon Ragasa.
