Earthquake in China

At 9:05 AM Beijing time on January 7, 2025, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in Xigaze City, Xizang Autonomous Region. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and was felt across the Himalayan region, including in Nepal, Bhutan, and northern India.

The earthquake caused significant damage to infrastructure in remote communities, impacted cultural and religious sites, and was felt as far as the Mount Everest base camp.

In response, the National Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Relief Commission activated a Level 2 national emergency protocol.

The disaster claimed more than 120 lives and left nearly 200 people injured.
