Earthquake in Indonesia
An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck Indonesia's Aceh province off the north-eastern coast of Sumatra Island on 7 December. 102 deaths have been reported so far, with hundreds more injured.
The area of the Pidie Jaya district was closest to the epicentre and worst affected with at least 250 buildings damaged including a number of mosques, shops and a school.
The Indonesian President immediately deployed hundreds of troops, mechanical diggers and medical staff to aid the rescue efforts as more people were feared trapped under fallen buildings. Thousands of people have been left homeless in the aftermath.
Though no tsunami alarms were raised, hundreds of people fled their homes amid fears of aftershocks in the region. A spokesman for Indonesia's disaster agency said it is likely the death toll and number of casualties would rise as the recovery operation was still underway.
