Hurricane Gonzalo, a Category Two storm, passed over Bermuda on 17 October 2014. The storm caused property damage, flooding and left thousands of people without power.

Gonzalo strengthened to a Category Four storm on 15 October, and had already been responsible for one death in the Caribbean before it reached Bermuda. It had been expected to strike Bermuda at this strength, but the storm weakened on 17 October and was reduced to Category Two when it passed over Bermuda. Gonzalo was the strongest storm to hit Bermuda since Hurricane Fabian in 2003.

It had been feared that Gonzalo would cause devastating damage to Bermuda, but due to it weakening no one was killed and damage was less severe than anticipated. The hurricane still brought powerful winds to the islands which damaged homes and infrastructure, blocked roads with debris and severed power lines.

The day after the storm relief operations began and within days power was restored and repairs were underway.

Not long before Hurricane Gonzalo, Bermuda had also been struck by Tropical Storm Fay on the morning of 12 October 2014, leaving property damage in its wake which affected thousands of people.

Residents of Bermuda experienced winds of 132 km/h (82 mph) at their peak as the storm passed over. No deaths were reported, but the strong winds tore down trees and damaged buildings, and left debris blocking roads. 27,000 people were also left without power for almost two days when the power lines were damaged.
