Flood in South Africa

Floods and mudslides in Durban and the surrounding KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, have killed over 60 people and displaced more than 1000.

Heavy rains have affected Southern and Eastern parts of the country with coastal areas still expecting more flooding and strong winds.

Buildings were severely damaged as flood waters washed through areas at high speed, closing two universities, schools and wider business districts. A church in KwaZulu-Natal collapsed killing the 13 people inside.

The South African president has visited local areas promising aid while rescuers continued to search and rescue survivors and displaced people.

Residents of low lying areas have been asked to move to higher ground while a severe weather warning remains in place for the coming days.
