Flood in Kenya
Intense rainfall triggered another humanitarian emergency in the highlands of Elgeyo Marakwet, Kenya.
On 1 November, a landslide swept through the region, destroying homes, roads, and farmland. The military deployed four aircraft to assist rescue teams in reaching areas that were completely cut off.
The death toll rose to at least 26, with 30 people still missing. More than 1,000 homes were destroyed, and dozens of people were injured or displaced. Survivors from Murkutwa and Chesongoch villages were airlifted to Eldoret for medical treatment.
Heavy rains continued across Kenya, with flash floods reported in multiple counties, displacing thousands. Rescue efforts were briefly suspended on Sunday due to worsening flood conditions.
This disaster highlighted Kenya’s vulnerability to extreme weather events, as the country struggled with both floods and drought. The landslides in Elgeyo Marakwet underscored the urgent need for improved climate resilience and disaster preparedness.
