Tropical Storm Erin in Cabo Verde
Tropical Storm Erin struck Cabo Verde after forming on 11 August, approximately 820 miles west of the islands. At the time, it carried maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and was moving westward at a brisk 23 mph.
On the island of São Vicente, flash floods occurred after an astonishing 8 inches of rain fell within just five hours. Authorities reported that at least nine people, including four children, were killed. Five people remain missing, and 1,500 have been displaced, with a total of 3,000 affected.
The torrential rains caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, homes, and commercial establishments.
Cabo Verde’s meteorological service has warned that additional showers and thunderstorms could trigger localized flooding in areas already saturated.
