Tropical Storm Erin in Cabo Verde

Tropical Storm Erin struck Cabo Verde after it formed on 11 August, about 820 miles west of the islands. At the time, it carried maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and moved westward at a brisk 23 mph.

On the island of São Vicente, flash floods occurred after an astonishing 8 inches of rain fell in just five hours. Authorities reported that at least nine people, including four children, were killed. Five people remained missing, and 1,500 were displaced, with a total of 3,000 affected.

The torrential rains caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, homes, and commercial buildings.

Cabo Verde’s meteorological service warned that additional showers and thunderstorms could trigger localized flooding in areas that were already saturated.
